Douglas County has been ranked seventh among Forbes Magazine’s recently-released  list of, “America’s 10 Richest Counties.”

Douglas County has a median household income of $99,522. The magazine described it as, “a relatively populous county with 280,000 residents, this county south of Denver has boomed over the last 10 years, luring young professionals with luxury homes and planned communities.” The bulk of the other richest counties are located on the east coast.

While Douglas County may be described as a “rich” county, there are many different homes to choose from in all price ranges – from the $200s up into the millions. It is a great place to live, offering an easy commute to the Denver Tech Center, a well-regarded school system, and many recreational opportunities. Many Douglas County areas, including Parker and Castle Rock, offer a strong sense of community and exude a sense of small-town charm that is often hard to find in suburban areas.

Douglas County has been named the healthiest county in Colorado. The County Health Rankings were released last week, ranking almost every county across the country in the following areas: the rate of people dying before age 75, the percentage of adult smokers, the percentage of people who report being in fair or poor health, the number of days people report being in poor physical and mental health, the percentage of adults who are obese, and the rate of infants with low birth weights. Social and economic factors were also studied, including unemployment rate, high school graduation rate, and the number of children in poverty.

Eagle, Pitkin, Boulder, and Summit counties rounded out the top five healthiest counties in Colorado. As for other Denver metro counties, Arapahoe County ranked 15th, Jefferson County ranked 11th, and Denver County ranked 45th.

While pictures of minivans might come to mind when you first think of Douglas County, Colorado, you better at least picture expensive minivans.

The county is apparently a hotbed for the “young and the wealthy.” A new Nielson Claritas’ demographic report reveals that Douglas County has the fifth highest concentration of 25-34 year olds, who are making over $100,000 annually, in the entire country.

The report reveals that Douglas County’s average household income is $102,379 with 7.23 percent of 24-34 year-olds making over $100,000 per year. Broomfield County was ranked 10th on the list, and several counties near Washington DC were also ranked.

Well, Denver residents were expecting a whirlwind during the DNC! Three tornadoes touched down southeast of Denver yesterday, on the eve of the DNC. One of the tornadoes, which touched down near the Rueter-Hess Reservoir in Parker, was about a mile from my house. The tornado spotting gave my family quite a scare! Two more tornadoes also touched down in Douglas County near Castle Rock and Parker yesterday evening.

We were a bit surprised at how little the sellers were willing to budge in the midst of the Denver buyer’s market. You are probably wondering about the home that was in such demand? Colorado continues to be a very healthy place to live. According to a recent study by the Trust for America’s Health, a research group that focuses on disease prevention, Colorado boasts the lowest adult obesity rate and the third-lowest childhood obesity rate in the entire United States. As the obesity epidemic grows at alarming pace, this is great news for our state. Just to give you an idea, Colorado’s obesity rate is a lean 17.9% while last-ranked Mississippi’s obesity rate is 30.6%. In addition, Boulder was recently ranked by Men’s Journal as one of the nation’s healthiest places while Douglas County was recently recognized by Money Magazine as one of the country’s "skinniest" counties.

Denver and many surrounding suburbs are becoming safer places to live. According to the 2006 Denver Neighborhood Crime Report, overall crime in the City of Denver declined 10% between 2005 and 2006. In addition, some of the Denver suburbs are seeing decreases in crime rates.

• Overall, there were approximately 46,000 reported crimes in Denver, which averages out to around 43 crimes per 1,000 residents.

   

• Bear Valley, Kennedy and Washington Park were among the Denver neighborhoods that saw the biggest decrease in crimes from 2005 to 2006. Washington Park saw a 31% decrease in crimes during the period including a 31 % decrease in the number of burglaries and auto thefts. A few Denver neighborhoods did not fare well in the report including Sun Valley, Five Points and City Park. These neighborhoods posted the largest crime rates per 1,000 residents in Denver.

   

• Douglas County continues to be a very safe place to live. YourHub.com reports that Douglas County saw a 14% decrease in violent crimes during the first half of 2007 compared to the same period last year. This conclusion is based on statistics from the Castle Rock Police, Lone Tree Police, Parker Police and the Douglas County Sheriff’s office. Both Castle Rock and Parker have seen slight reductions in violent crimes this year.

   

• In late 2005, the 12th Annual Safest Cities Award recognized Centennial, located in Arapahoe County, as the 25^th safest American city.
