The Colorado Rockies aren’t the ones playing well in the big leagues this fall. Denver’s Cherry Creek Shopping Center has joined the ranks of the most prestigious and top-revenue generating malls in the country.

While the entire Denver area has been completely immersed in the Colorado Rockies’ amazing post season, the Christmas shopping season has slowly crept up on us. With it, comes the eagerly anticipated opening of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center’s new Nordstrom store on October 19th. With the opening of the new Nordstrom, the Denver Post reports that the upscale Cherry Creek Shopping Center has joined an elite group of six malls across the country that showcase the exclusive set of Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Macy’s. This elite bunch includes several well-known malls across the country including San Diego’s Fashion Valley.

The entire Cherry Creek shopping area, including the fashionable Cherry Creek North shopping district, generates the highest sales tax revenue for the City of Denver. Fueled by affluent shoppers who are single professionals or empty nesters, the Cherry Creek mall’s revenue ranks in the top one percent of all malls in the United States. As one of Denver’s top tourist attractions, it will likely be a popular spot during Denver’s 2008 Democratic National Convention.

The development debate, which is common in the Denver suburbs, has moved into Denver’s Lowry neighborhood. Lowry has a long history as an active Air Force base but future development is currently under debate. 

Lowry, a national model for urban revitalization, is one of the most sought after areas in the Denver real estate market because of its pristine location near the prestigious Cherry Creek area, Downtown Denver and the new Anschutz Medical Campus. According to The Denver Post, Lowry’s single-family home values increased 78 percent from 2000 to 2006 compared to the overall Denver real estate market’s home appreciation of 45.2 percent. It is understandable why Denver developers and homebuilders are eager cash in on this thriving Denver community but not everyone is happy about it.

Lowry’s new EastPark Neighborhood is now open. The neighborhood is slated to have approximately 600 homes upon completion, to have a variety of homes ranging from condos to custom homes. The new neighborhood sits atop the rest of Lowry with views of downtown Denver and the mountains. EastPark’s builders include Standard Pacific Homes and McStain Homes. 

EastPark, which some intend to be Lowry’s last residential neighborhood, may be only the beginning of new development. According to the article in The Denver Post, two new proposed projects could add as many as 3,000 more homes to Lowry. Many of these proposed homes were not included in the original redevelopment plan that was created in the 1990s.  This has many current Lowry residents unhappy.  Some are concerned about crowded schools and increased traffic congestion.

Since late summer is typically unbearably hot and humid across much of the country, August is a time when tourists love to come to “Colorful Colorado.” If this includes an out-of-town visitor for you, it is a good idea to have a plan since you will likely be responsible for their entertainment. There are many fun things to do with out-of-towners in and around Denver in addition to great day trip opportunities.

Colorado Mountains 

You can almost bet on the fact that your guests will want to visit the Rocky Mountains, which are beautiful and peaceful during the summer. The following list includes mountain areas that make good day trips since they aren’t very far from the Denver metro area but provide lots of fun for out-of-towners.

• Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park: Take a scenic yet very dramatic drive through the Rocky Mountain National Park, which sits at over 12,000 feet. On the way home, stop at Estes Park, a charming mountain town with a multitude of shopping and dining opportunities.

• Breckenridge: Located less than two hours from Denver, Breckenridge is an upscale, trendy mountain town with endless boutiques, restaurants and summer events.

• Pikes Peak: Pikes Peak, located in Colorado Springs, is the most visited mountain in America so why not take your mountain hungry visitors there? Be sure to set aside a few hours to make the 38-mile round trip to the summit.

Denver Attractions

• Coors Brewery (Golden): Tours of the famous Golden brewery are given Monday-Saturday from 10-4.

• Parade of Homes at Southshore (Aurora): Your out-of-town guests might enjoy seeing some Colorado’s fine architecture and furnishings. The Parade runs through Labor Day weekend.

• Coors Field (LoDo): Catch a Colorado Rockies’ game in one of the country’s most beautiful baseball stadiums. 

 Denver Shopping

• 16th Street Mall (Denver): A stroll down Denver’s 16^th Street Mall will provide many hours of entertainment and give your guests a taste of downtown Denver’s unique ambience.

• Pearl Street Mall (Boulder): Pearl Street is not only great for shopping, dining and nightlife, but provides endless opportunities for watching some of Boulder’s more “unique” residents.

• Outlets at Castle Rock (Castle Rock): If your visitors like good deals, take them to Castle Rock’s Outlet mall, which is crawling with bargains.

• Cherry Creek Mall (Denver): Consistently one of Denver’s top tourist attractions, the prestigious Cherry Creek area exudes a sense of class and elegance with its fine stores and restaurants.

Denver Dining

• ChopHouse (Denver): One of Denver’s many fine restaurants that out-of-town guests are sure to love.

• Brown Palace Hotel (Denver): This historical Denver landmark has several fine restaurants plus serves an afternoon tea.

• Casa Bonita (Lakewood): Sure, the pink building is a bit tacky, but Casa Bonita is a famous Denver landmark complete with cliff divers. Just a tip, if your guests are looking for upscale dining, this isn’t the place for them (although the sopapillas are great)!
