It has been a big week for Douglas County!

First up: Douglas County landed in the fourth spot on CNN Money’s recently-released “25 Best Places for Jobs.” The report gave a nod to Douglas County because it is home to six Fortune 500 companies, including Liberty Media, Dish Network and Sprint Nextel. According to the report, companies are bringing jobs to Douglas County because of “a great tax rate, a highly educated workforce and some of the most beautiful country on any side of the Rockies.”

Next up: Money Magazine released its annual “Best Places to Live” report last week with two Douglas County towns landing on the list of the top 100 small towns in the country. Castle Rock was ranked #19 and Parker was ranked #29. Towns across the country were evaluated on job opportunities, schools, safety, economic strength, weather, entertainment and more.

Castle Rock, ranked #19, was described as: “with roots in mining and railroads, this affluent town offers an updated taste of the Old West. It boasts an historic downtown area, 265 acres of parks, and 44 miles of trails.”

Parker, ranked #29, was selected because as “one of the healthiest communities in America, this young town can expect a wealth of new recreation opportunities when a local reservoir is completed in 2012. What’s more, an arts center with a theater, dance studio, and 250-seat outdoor amphitheater is scheduled to open before the end of 2011.”

In addition to the  highly-ranked Douglas County towns, the Denver metro area was also represented by Louisville, which landed in the number one spot in the country and Superior, which was ranked #20.

This just confirms that Douglas County, along with the entire Denver metro area, is a wonderful place to call home!

Castle Rock has been named among Family Circle’s “10 Best Towns for Families.” The magazine searched for communities that “combine big-city opportunities with suburban charm, locations that offer an ideal blend of affordable houses, good jobs, top-rated schools, wide-open spaces, and a lot less stress.” The magazine also mentioned that the town “spent $2 million this year to buy land with a 6,785-foot butte; the reward for making the 20-minute hike is an awesome view.”

Douglas County has been ranked seventh among Forbes Magazine’s recently-released  list of, “America’s 10 Richest Counties.”

Douglas County has a median household income of $99,522. The magazine described it as, “a relatively populous county with 280,000 residents, this county south of Denver has boomed over the last 10 years, luring young professionals with luxury homes and planned communities.” The bulk of the other richest counties are located on the east coast.

While Douglas County may be described as a “rich” county, there are many different homes to choose from in all price ranges – from the $200s up into the millions. It is a great place to live, offering an easy commute to the Denver Tech Center, a well-regarded school system, and many recreational opportunities. Many Douglas County areas, including Parker and Castle Rock, offer a strong sense of community and exude a sense of small-town charm that is often hard to find in suburban areas.

Douglas County was also recently named the healthiest county in Colorado.

Douglas County has been named the healthiest county in Colorado. The County Health Rankings were released last week, ranking almost every county across the country in the following areas: the rate of people dying before age 75, the percentage of adult smokers, the percentage of people who report being in fair or poor health, the number of days people report being in poor physical and mental health, the percentage of adults who are obese, and the rate of infants with low birth weights. Social and economic factors were also studied, including unemployment rate, high school graduation rate, and the number of children in poverty.

Eagle, Pitkin, Boulder, and Summit counties rounded out the top five healthiest counties in Colorado. As for other Denver metro counties, Arapahoe County ranked 15th, Jefferson County ranked 11th, and Denver County ranked 45th.

Littleton, Colorado, is having a great month! In November, Littleton was named among Cnnfn.com’s “Eight Cities That Want Your Business.” This past week, Littleton was named Bloomberg’s, “Best place to raise kids in Colorado.”

According to the report, Littleton was selected as a great place to raise kids because its residents have “access to public transportation to Denver, about 10 miles away, via light rail. Littleton has a historic district and museums and is home to South Platte Park, one of the largest suburban parks.”

In addition to offering a plethora of recreational opportunities to families, Littleton is also home to some of the best schools in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Education recently unveiled its new rating system and Littleton Public Schools was one of the few districts in Colorado to achieve the honor of “Accredited with Distinction.”

It’s official. Littleton, Colorado wants your business! Cnnfn.com recently released its, “8 cities that want your business!” and Littleton landed in the sixth spot. The city was recognized for its “economic gardening” program, which originated back in the late 1980s after Lockheed Martin laid 7,000 people off from its Littleton office.

The economic program helps strengthen companies with 10 to 100 employees by providing access to information and resources, including access to market research and helping find funding for them. This information, which larger companies usually take for granted, creates a favorable business environment to entrepreneurs.

The article mentions that the program is working, including for ADA Environmental Systems, a pollution-control company that focuses on coal-fired power plants, and Charter Software, maker of business management software for farm and construction equipment dealers.

Littleton, Colorado is a great place to call home. Home to approximately 40,300 people (as of the 2000 census), the city offers many easy and convenient access points, along with a nostalgic downtown that is home to numerous charming shops and popular restaurants.

There was more good news for the Denver housing market last week. According to the recently-released S&P/Case-Shiller Home Prices Indices, for the six month in a row, Denver home prices increased year-to-year.

The closely-analyzed report indicated a 4.4 percent increase from April 2009 to April 2010. This is the tenth best showing in the country. Denver home prices rose 1.7 percent from March to April, which was the seventh highest monthly increase of the 20 cities in the report. The average price increase of all cities surveyed was 3.8 percent. San Francisco saw the biggest year-to-year increase in April (18 percent), along with San Diego (11.7 percent) and Minneapolis (9.5 percent).

Slow and steady has always won the race for the Denver housing market. It never saw the huge gains in housing prices that many other cities had, and didn’t suffer the huge falls that followed. The city of Denver’s population grew by 56,654 people over the last decade, according to a recent article in the Denver Business Journal on new U.S. Census Bureau numbers. Between 2000 and 2009, Denver’s population grew to 610,345, a 10.2 percent increase. This makes Denver the 24th largest city in the country. Other fast-growing Colorado cities include Thornton with a whopping 42.6 growth rate, and Aurora with a 17.4 percent growth rate. The three largest cities in the country continue to be New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, respectively.

Denver’s growth spurt reflects a new trend of slowing suburban growth, especially during the the recession in the latter part of the decade. People are apparently less mobile and are sticking to more urban areas.
