Lone Tree, Colorado, is a vibrant community located approximately 18 miles south of Denver. Like many other Douglas County communities, Lone Tree has thrived over the past few decades, even during the down economy. It is hard to find a more ideal location – Lone Tree is located only minutes from the Denver Tech Center (DTC)/Meridian and it is home to Park Meadows Mall, SkyRidge Medical Center and to the most southern stop on Denver’s light rail system.

A brief history of Lone Tree: The first homeowners moved into Lone Tree in 1982 but it wasn’t until 1995 when the City of Lone Tree was actually incorporated. Lone Tree voters approved annexation of 3,500-acre RidgeGate property in 2000. Park Meadows Mall was annexed into Lone Tree in 2007, which has greatly benefited the community.

The future of Lone Tree is bright. With the new RidgeGate Parkway East/Mainstreet Extension opening a year ago, the possibilities are endless for Lone Tree.  RidgeGate, a six-square-mile property south of Lincoln Avenue, was annexed in 2000 and is already partially developed. According to recent article in the Lone Tree News, there are plans for Lone Tree’s city center to be located in RidgeGate, which will include an urban style core with high-rise buildings and a new light rail station.

BusinessWeek recently named the country’s “Best Affordable Suburbs in America,” and Douglas County’s Roxborough Park made the list. Roxborough Park, Colorado, a Denver-area suburb with a population of 8,211, was ranked as the seventh best affordable suburb in the country, based on its affordability, high quality of life, amenities (country clubs and golf courses), low crime rate, quality education and low commute times.

The magazine described Roxborough Park as, “The red rock formations near Roxborough Park, a community that developed in the 1970s, are considered some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Colorado. The 3,339-acre state park offers residents hiking and biking trails, cross-country skiing, and educational programs for Colorado geology and wildlife. The Douglas County School District is one of the best in the state.”

While pictures of minivans might come to mind when you first think of Douglas County, Colorado, you better at least picture expensive minivans.

The county is apparently a hotbed for the “young and the wealthy.” A new Nielson Claritas’ demographic report reveals that Douglas County has the fifth highest concentration of 25-34 year olds, who are making over $100,000 annually, in the entire country.

The report reveals that Douglas County’s average household income is $102,379 with 7.23 percent of 24-34 year-olds making over $100,000 per year. Broomfield County was ranked 10th on the list, and several counties near Washington DC were also ranked.

Denver’s quaint University Hills neighborhood, also known as Observatory Park,  is an older area nestled between Hampden Avenue, Colorado Boulevard, Evans and I-25.  This area is perfect for commuting to the Denver Tech Center and for traveling to the mountains because of its close proximity to the interstate.  Most of the homes in the area date back to the 1950s, however many homes have been “scraped.”  As a result, home prices in University Hills vary from the $100,000s to upwards of $1,000,000.

Don’t miss today’s Denver Post real estate section that features, “A lesser-known Park Hill,” by Christian Toto. My expertise on the Park Hill neighborhood is showcased in the article, which examines the “unofficial” Park Hill neighborhood, lying to the east of Monaco Parkway. Many of TeamCox’s buyers are attracted to the vibrant Park Hill neighborhood, including a young couple who will be arriving this week for a house-hunting trip. The couple, a newly minted doctor and her husband, is searching for an affordable home in the dynamic northeast Denver neighborhoods of Park Hill or Stapleton.
